James Farmer Scholars and Multicultural Center

Our presentation today was great. Way to go team!

Anyways, I think the next logical step in our research is to tap into other campus resources. Tim mentioned that we could go talk to the people that are in charge of the James Farmer Scholars program and the James Farmer Multicultural Center. These two outlets may provide some valuable insight to when he taught here.

The James Farmer Scholars website lists a nice concise blurb about his life, but then also lists all the awards he has received from various colleges and other sources in the nation. We should ask them for permission to use these dates, or at least link to their site. We might want to emphasize this because his program made a huge impact on the student minorities in the local community. This would be a great bridge to his continued activist work outside the UMW campus. Just a thought.

Before break I’m working on loading the links of the photos to the UMW archives to our timeline and Colin is going to work on the html to make it work. We’re hoping to have a meeting on Sunday or Monday to work on our wiki for the UMW historic marker.

Trip to special collections Feb 25, 2008

Today I went to the special collections from 1:30 until 2:45. During my short time there I reviewed 2 file folders. (My goal was 3). It was very interesting to read letters written by Farmer himself. He knew how to write in shorthand. It took more time than I suspected to go through the files Mrs. Parson pulled. I had fun. It was fun reading his letters and their responses. Below are my notes about my research.

File: Dr. James Farmer (1920-1999)

-National civil Rights museum

Correspondence

Travel arrangements canceled to the civil rights museum.

(Farmer wrote in short hand at bottom of letter)

Farmer indorsed the civil rights Museum July 1991

A Memphis Circuit Court Judge, D’Army Bailey requested the presence of Farmer for events held from July 2-4 in Memphis.

Topics of the freedom rides and non violent demonstrations were the subject of the workshops. Large participation and media coverage was expected.

His arrangements were canceled, because he had to attend a funereal.

The National Civil Rights Museum is at the Lorraine Motel, where MLK was shot.

Good info for time line.

James Farmer
National Freedom Award Recipient
Year: 1991

What is a Freedom award? Read this …..Established in 1991 to pay tribute to individuals whose accomplishments depict the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement, the National Civil Rights Museum annually selects a national, international and lifetime achievement award recipient of the Freedom Award.

Can’t use above until we get permission from museum.

However we can use the below words of Farmer writing about endorsing the Civil Rights Museum. I Think it will be a good quote.

“In a people’s epic struggle to improve their lot, every part of the history of that effort must be preserved—the writing, the photographs, the artifacts and the other mementos of the glory and the suffering and the victories and defeats. For that reason I enthusiastically endorse the development of the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee as a multi-faceted record of that took place in our long strides toward a better life in America.” –James Farmer

File: James Farmer (1920-1999)

- correspondence: Civil Rights Reunion (1991)

Oct 27, 1990

Farmer writes a letter about the upcoming 1991 Civil Rights Reunion/Freedom Rides Commemoration which was the first one. It was scheduled in Jackson Mississippi on the weekend of May 3-5 1991.

Farmer was the chair of the planning committee.

I think it would be cool (with permission of course) to put the Award on Farmers timeline along with the picture that’s on the web site and post a link to the Civil Rights Museum.

Tell me what you think team!

Nikole’s to do list

This week I plan to…

…Go to special collections and determine what items need copywrite permission letters and get permission for McClurken and/or provost and send them out before spring break.

…schedule a scanning training session with Mrs. Parsons and report the date to the class so they can send a representative from there group if they would like.

… Prepare for our 10-15 minute progress report. As per our contract we will present an inventory of what audio and video we have identified as essential to our site. Present our copyright letter and discuss some of the people that we are writing to. **** In efforts for this progress report to be successful, I need to make sure I get most, if not all of my research done this week.

… I will take a picture of the James Farmer Bust with my digital camera so at least we will have something to post on our site.

Special Collection Visit

Posted by Nikole on Feb 16, 20o8

On Wednesday Feb 13, 2008 I went to the Library to speak with Carolyn Parson ,the Special Collections Librarian. She had some interesting information. First of all, she provided me with a list of the James Farmer information including cassette tapes, video, print and photos. Unfortunately, most of the information on the list UMW does not have copywrite permission to use.

First of all, our group needs to take a look at the info we have permission to use and see if we want to use it.

Secondly, our group needs to see what info we want to use in which we do not have the copywrite for and start the daunting task of getting permission. Mrs. Parsons stated that because copywrite permission for our website will not be a one time use, that the owner of the copywrite my want monetary compensation.

I spoke to Jerry about digitalizing some cassette tapes, if in fact we had permission to do so and wanted to use them, he said he will convert material for us. Depending on the volume of material we are asking for, it will take about 2 weeks. We need to keep this time-frame in mind so we are able to meet our deadlines.

Mrs. Parsons also said that she has photos of Farmer that have not yet been recorded or scanned into the system. (Tim also mentioned these photos) If we want to use these photos, Mrs. Parson said she would train a couple members of our group to scan these photos according to UMW standards.

Mrs. Parson also showed me the library’s James L. Farmer image collection website and said all photos posted to this site are property of UMW, therefore we are allowed to use them for our project.

My plan is to go back the collections on Tuesday and look at the material UMW as copywrite for. I will report back to the group and will discuss in which way we will move forward.

Tim’s walk and talk

What can we use?
The problem is copyright

Is everything copyrights? Pretty much yeah, you can work on tracking down photos we don’t own copyright to. We can write to get them

Where what who how?
They’re in the archive…our own copyrighted stuff Tim will give to us….they are in a folder.

We could split up getting permission for copyrights.

Bibliography is done. The librarians have done it, but its not great for public consumption…but there is an index.

Tim will be back next week..next week we can start getting copyright.

Get a solid timeline… better sense of his life and biography

tackle lay bare and learn as much about james farmer and start a good timeline

cross reference dates

Tim will try to be in class next thursday

how many actual full text speeches are preserved in his papers?
