One drawback, though: it will appear the same size in the bubble as the original picture, so no physically huge pictures unless we resize them.

Thanks goes to Austin for this, it took only 5 minutes.

Our presentation today was great. Way to go team!

Anyways, I think the next logical step in our research is to tap into other campus resources. Tim mentioned that we could go talk to the people that are in charge of the James Farmer Scholars program and the James Farmer Multicultural Center. These two outlets may provide some valuable insight to when he taught here.

The James Farmer Scholars website lists a nice concise blurb about his life, but then also lists all the awards he has received from various colleges and other sources in the nation. We should ask them for permission to use these dates, or at least link to their site. We might want to emphasize this because his program made a huge impact on the student minorities in the local community. This would be a great bridge to his continued activist work outside the UMW campus. Just a thought.

http://www.umw.edu/cas/jfscholars/who/de…

Before break I’m working on loading the links of the photos to the UMW archives to our timeline and Colin is going to work on the html to make it work. We’re hoping to have a meeting on Sunday or Monday to work on our wiki for the UMW historic marker.

So like I said, I’m sitting in the library looking at older Bullets. Here’s what I got:

April 9th, 1985: Civil Rights Activist Speaks Farmer Remembers Struggles
Huge front cover picture, this is the first Farmer story I think. (Pg 1, 5)

Quotes:
” The old and the young, the white and the black all managed to step outside of themselves to find something to believe in.”
“I risked what I did to improve the nation. We wanted to make what we loved better and make it more deserving of that love.”
“I was scared all the time in the 60s and anyone who wasn’t, was a liar or totally without imagination.”

September 17, 1985: New Professors Join MWC Ranks (pg. 9)
no picture, just a short blurb about Farmer, says he taught at Lincoln University in PA, NYU and Antioch University (no dates). Also says his lectures are entitled ” The History of the Civil Rights Movement in the Twentieth Century.”

January 28, 1986: Civil Rights Leader to Speak in Dodd (pg 3)
Farmer organized for Ralph Abernathy of the SCLC to speak and it talks about Farmer travelling and speaking around MLK day.

November 18, 1986: WNVT to Air Farmer Series(pg 2)
Info about the “Civil Rights LEaders” 3-part series w/ interviews by Farmer

January 27, 1987:Farmer Doing Better (pg 2)
Apparently Farmer suffered a heart attack Jan 19, 1987 right after an MLK speech at Antioch University. Says he teaches one class at MWC that semester.

ok on a sidenote- April 19, 1988 Dog Saves Drunken Crawley
Crawley got wasted and fell out of a tree with panties on his head. No joke.

i’ll be a little late to our meeting…

Today I went to the special collections from 1:30 until 2:45. During my short time there I reviewed 2 file folders. (My goal was 3). It was very interesting to read letters written by Farmer himself. He knew how to write in shorthand. It took more time than I suspected to go through the files Mrs. Parson pulled. I had fun. It was fun reading his letters and their responses. Below are my notes about my research.

File: Dr. James Farmer (1920-1999)

-National civil Rights museum

Correspondence

- Travel arrangements canceled to the civil rights museum.

(Farmer wrote in short hand at bottom of letter)

Farmer indorsed the civil rights Museum July 1991

A Memphis Circuit Court Judge, D’Army Bailey requested the presence of Farmer for events held from July 2-4 in Memphis.

Topics of the freedom rides and non violent demonstrations were the subject of the workshops. Large participation and media coverage was expected.

His arrangements were canceled, because he had to attend a funereal.

The National Civil Rights Museum is at the Lorraine Motel, where MLK was shot.

http://www.civilrightsmuseum.org/default.asp

http://www.civilrightsmuseum.org/freedom/awardarchive.asp

Good info for time line.

James Farmer
National Freedom Award Recipient
Year: 1991

What is a Freedom award? Read this …..Established in 1991 to pay tribute to individuals whose accomplishments depict the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement, the National Civil Rights Museum annually selects a national, international and lifetime achievement award recipient of the Freedom Award.

Can’t use above until we get permission from museum.

However we can use the below words of Farmer writing about endorsing the Civil Rights Museum. I Think it will be a good quote.

“In a people’s epic struggle to improve their lot, every part of the history of that effort must be preserved—the writing, the photographs, the artifacts and the other mementos of the glory and the suffering and the victories and defeats. For that reason I enthusiastically endorse the development of the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee as a multi-faceted record of that took place in our long strides toward a better life in America.” –James Farmer

File: James Farmer (1920-1999)

- correspondence: Civil Rights Reunion (1991)

Oct 27, 1990

Farmer writes a letter about the upcoming 1991 Civil Rights Reunion/Freedom Rides Commemoration which was the first one. It was scheduled in Jackson Mississippi on the weekend of May 3-5 1991.

Farmer was the chair of the planning committee.

I think it would be cool (with permission of course) to put the Award on Farmers timeline along with the picture that’s on the web site and post a link to the Civil Rights Museum.

Tell me what you think team!

First off, I love this theme.

Second, I spent some time on the Library of Congress website this weekend, and they have audio recordings of some of James Farmer’s speeches and press appearances. They are not, however, public domain, but it’s somewhere to look into. I’ll be up there in the Library later this week, so do you guys think I should check it out?

Now, the timeline. I did a lot to it.

Added several Civil Rights Movement events and created a Civil Rights category.

Beefed up some of the facts we had on some of the events.

Added a “source” column so we can start putting in where we are finding this information.

Changed the exhibit HTML code to show the source when the bubble appears after someone clicks on an event of timespan.

Put our timeline out on the actual internet so that all of you can see what our timeline looks like after we add stuff to it in GoogleDocs.

Doing that last part was a trial. Here’s the bad news: since we have to modify an HTML document from scratch to put the javascript code into the <HEAD> tags, its not possible to put the timeline up in Wordpress with the rest of our work right now. I tried and Wordpress barked at me about security settings. We may have to talk to the DTLT people about it and see if they can make an exception for us on the umwblogs.org server.

I have a stable version of our timeline here on Geocities, but I hope to not keep it there.

… I will take a picture of the James Farmer Bust with my digital camera so at least we will have something to post on our site.
